# Protect Your Winning Ticket: Damage, Loss, and Fake-Ticket Scams

In the lottery world, a physical paper ticket is a "bearer instrument"—whoever holds the valid original ticket is presumed to be the owner. If a winning ticket is lost, stolen, badly damaged, or ruined by heat, claiming the prize becomes extremely difficult.

Treat any potential winning ticket like high-value cash from the moment you notice a match, and protect it from both physical damage and fraudulent schemes.

## Preventing physical damage to thermal paper

Lottery slips are printed on specialized thermal paper using heat rather than liquid ink. Applying external heat (such as a laminating machine, hair dryer, hot iron, or car dashboard in direct sunlight) will turn the entire ticket black and permanently destroy the barcode.

Keep your ticket flat, dry, and stored inside a paper envelope at room temperature. Avoid folding through barcode lines, writing over serial numbers, or exposing the paper to water, oils, or chemical cleaners.

- Never laminate a lottery ticket under any circumstances.
- Keep away from heat, direct sunlight, moisture, and chemical liquids.
- Do not staple, tape, or write across the printed barcode and security numbers.

## Digital privacy: Do not post full ticket photos online

Taking a private photo of your ticket immediately after purchase helps record the serial numbers in case of loss. However, never post unredacted photos of winning tickets on social media or public forums.

Exposing the full barcode, QR code, or serial number enables bad actors to attempt fraudulent claims, fabricate duplicate tickets, or target you for extortion and scams.

## Recognizing common third-party ticket scams

A classic lottery scam involves a stranger offering to sell you a "winning ticket" at a heavy discount, claiming they cannot cash it due to immigration status, taxes, or religious reasons. These tickets are almost always counterfeit, stolen, or altered.

Operators like Magnum explicitly warn the public that tickets purchased from unauthorized third parties will not be honored. Never buy lottery tickets from individuals outside licensed retail counters.

## Key points

- Lottery tickets are printed on thermal paper: NEVER laminate or heat them.
- Store tickets in a cool, dry, dark place without writing over barcodes.
- Take a private photo for records, but never share unredacted ticket photos online.
- Never purchase supposedly winning tickets from third parties or strangers.
- Report lost or damaged winning tickets to the issuing operator immediately.
